Emergency Dental Treatment Q&A

by Michael Baharestani, DDS

What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency can include any type of damage or condition that affects your teeth or gums and that causes symptoms that warrant immediate care and treatment. Emergency dental treatment is appropriate for many conditions, including:

  • broken, cracked or chipped teeth
  • loose teeth
  • lost teeth or teeth that have been knocked out
  • broken or lost crowns
  • broken bridges
  • lost fillings
  • tender, swollen gums or abscessed teeth

Emergency dental treatment may be performed the same day in many cases, while in others, taking pain relievers may enable you to wait until the next day for treatment. Any time you experience an emergency, you should call the office to determine what steps to take.

What should I do if a tooth gets knocked out?

A lost tooth is an emergency requiring immediate care to save the tooth if possible. When a tooth is knocked out, try placing it back in the socket if possible. If that isn’t possible, place it between your cheek and gum or, as a last resort, a glass of milk, and call the office immediately or proceed to the emergency room. In many cases, the tooth can be “replanted” into the gum. Take care not to touch the tooth root, which can cause damage that can prevent it from being replanted.

Is there anything I can do to prevent a dental emergency?

Taking good care of your teeth can be a tremendous help in avoiding many emergencies. See the dentist regularly to spot and correct issues of decay as soon as they occur to prevent teeth from weakening. Replace old or loose fillings with new composite fillings that bond better with the tooth surface. Wear a mouthguard when engaging in sports or activities that could involve impact to your teeth, and never use your teeth as tools.
