Root Canal Treatment Q&A

by Michael Baharestani, DDS

When is a root canal performed?

Root canals are performed to treat decay and damage to the soft central portion of the tooth, or the pulp. When the pulp becomes infected, a normal filling won’t suffice; root canal is designed to reach those deeper layers, removing decayed material and refilling the canal so the tooth remains stable and intact. Many factors can contribute to pulp damage, including deep decay, ill-fitting crowns, cracks or chips in a tooth, or other types of trauma.

What symptoms indicate I might need a root canal?

The most common symptoms experienced in patients who need root canals are increased and prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, pain when chewing, swelling and tenderness in the gum around the tooth, discharge from the gum or tooth discoloration. In early stages of decay or disease, there may be few or no symptoms. The best way to tell if you need a root canal is to call the office as soon as you notice symptoms.

What happens during a root canal?

Once your tooth is anesthetized, the dentist will carefully remove the infected or damaged pulp and clean the cavity. A special filling material will be used to fill the cavity, and the repair will be sealed to prevent additional decay from occurring. Once the root canal is complete, you may decide to have a crown placed over your tooth to increase its strength and to hide any discoloration that may occur once the pulp is removed.

Why can’t I just have the tooth pulled?

Root canal enables you to keep your own natural tooth, avoiding the need for dentures, implants or bridges and enabling you to preserve your normal bite pattern. In short, preserving your tooth is often the least costly option in the long run, and it can prevent you from the hassle of wearing dentures.

What can I expect during or after the root canal?

Modern root canal techniques and anesthetics can make the treatment as pain free as having a filling. However, by having the treatment done as soon as a diagnosis for such is made or as soon as symptoms are realized usually makes the treatment more comfortable. It is normal to feel soreness, especially to biting for a few days after the procedure. This would be particularly the case if there was pain or infection prior to the treatment. It is important to note that you should avoid chewing on the treated tooth until returning to your dentist for the restoration of the tooth. Restoring the tooth is very important because it allows for proper function and protects the tooth from possible reinfection and fracture. We will also discuss the post operative instructions with you in order to minimize any possible discomfort.
